How to calculate crypto average price
The crypto average price (average cost basis) is not simply the sum of prices divided by the number of buys; it is a weighted average by quantity. If you bought the same coin several times, add up the cost of each buy (price x quantity) to get the total cost, then divide by the total quantity.
| Item | Formula / Example |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Σ (buy price x quantity) |
| Total quantity | Σ quantity |
| Average price | total cost / total quantity |
| Example | $50,000 x 0.5 + $40,000 x 0.5 = $45,000 over 1 coin → average price $45,000 |
A lower average price means more profit at the same sell price, so some traders buy more when the price drops (averaging down) to lower their average. Just remember that only the average price drops — the capital you have invested grows, so be careful. For the concepts, see the Understanding Crypto Average Price & Breakeven guide.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How is the crypto average price calculated?
The crypto average price (cost basis) is a weighted average. You add up the cost of each buy (price x quantity) to get the total cost, then divide by the total quantity bought. In other words, average price = total cost / total quantity. It is not a simple average of prices; it is weighted by quantity.
Are buy fees included in the average price?
This average price calculator uses only the raw buy price and quantity for the weighted average and does not include fees. To see the true breakeven price including fees, use the averaging-down & breakeven calculator; to see profit on a sale, use the profit calculator.
Can I enter fractional quantities?
Yes. Crypto is often traded in fractions such as 0.5 or 0.001 coins, so you can enter decimals in the quantity field. Prices can be decimals too.
Why is this average price different from my exchange's value?
Exchange average prices may fold in buy fees, or recalculate based on remaining quantity if some sells are mixed in, so values can differ. This calculator is a simple estimate based only on the buys you enter.
